The Diary of a Chambermaid (2026)
Journal d’une femme de chambre
Director: Radu Jude
Cast: Ana Dumitrașcu, Mélanie Thierry, Vincent Macaigne, Marie Rivière, Louen Bouteiller
Did you know? The film deliberately blurs the line between Gianina’s real life and her theatrical rehearsals, with the script incorporating direct passages from Octave Mirbeau’s original 1900 novel to mirror her own struggles as a migrant mother.
Why Watch: This poignant drama masterfully intertwines class critique with a gut-wrenching story of maternal sacrifice, as a Romanian housekeeper rehearses a role that eerily mirrors her own life while yearning for her distant daughter. The film’s quiet intensity and powerful lead performance transform Octave Mirbeau’s classic into a deeply modern meditation on the invisible labor and emotional wounds of migrant motherhood. Watch it for a beautifully acted, slow-burn exploration of love and absence that will linger long after the credits roll.
A young Romanian woman named Gianina keeps house for an affluent family in Bordeaux. By night, she rehearses the role of a domestic servant with an amateur theater group, performing in an adaptation of Octave Mirbeau’s *The Diary of a Chambermaid*. She looks after Louen, the couple’s son, while her own daughter grows up far away in Romania. This separation from her child carves a deepening emotional wound. Yet, as the Christmas season draws near, the hope of a reunion slowly starts to glow on the horizon.
