Spring 2002, Afghanistan. After the Taliban regime crumbles, the country sinks into devastating poverty. Desperate to feed his family, a father sells his 15-year-old daughter to a 65-year-old man. But her mother refuses to accept this grim fate. Determined to give her child a better life, she arranges a marriage with a man in Montreal—on one solemn condition: the children from this union must one day marry their cousins back in Afghanistan. Fast-forward to Spring 2020, Montreal. That old pact comes roaring back. Zarmina, now fully integrated into Quebec society, won’t let her own 15-year-old daughter be forced into marriage with a cousin in Afghanistan. Her firm refusal sets off a tragic cascade of events that no one sees coming.
