In the midst of Hong Kong’s 2019 unrest, a filmmaker on the verge of leaving for school in Taiwan was suddenly stopped in his tracks by a text from his father. As the city slid into pandemic isolation, the director, now based in Taiwan, started video-calling his dad on Skype—slowly unraveling buried trauma and the tangled emotions that had long bound them together.
