Zhang Juzheng, a stage work by Mao Dun Literature Prize–winner Xiong Zhaozheng, co-directed by Feng Yuanzheng and Yan Rui, weaves a twin-threaded narrative—one grounded in reality, the other in illusion—to trace the inner world of the Ming Dynasty’s grand secretary as he pushes forward sweeping reforms. Spanning from earthly existence to the cosmic expanse, from the untamed margins to the imperial heart, the drama pulses with conflict, using historical echoes to explore the hopes and destinies of a reformer. Onstage, three dragon thrones of varied scales and eight crimson pillars conjure an evocative, minimalist set. This cinematic theatrical experience employs sharp, distinctive visual storytelling to spotlight the cast’s nuanced performances, magnifying the stage’s audio-visual impact and crafting a distinctly oriental aesthetic.
