Some people never leave the nest where they were born—where their family’s entire history lives within the walls. At eighty-eight, Benigno still sleeps, eats, and dreams beneath the same roof where he first opened his eyes, a home anchored deep in the earth while reaching toward the sky. This solitary dwelling stands alone with Benigno and his tortoise, Totó, floating together in a quiet limbo of memories, daily rituals, and the quiet waiting for the final dawn. Just beside the house lies his vegetable garden, where each day he tends his chickens and works the soil using seeds passed down from his ancestors—carefully cataloged and preserved like sacred heirlooms.
