In 1980s Cologne, young Iris dreams of becoming a lawyer. But her home life is a tightrope walk: her father, Mustafa, is lost in a haze of shattered ambitions and gambling debts, while her mother, Mimi, holds everything together through grueling work as a cleaner and sex worker. Even after an AIDS diagnosis, Mimi refuses to let her own suffering dim Iris’s future, fighting tirelessly to keep her daughter’s aspirations alive.
