Voice of State is a 2026 Kenyan historical drama thriller based on the events of July 31 to August 1, 1982. It follows radio broadcaster Leonard Mambo Mbotela after armed soldiers force him to accompany them during a coup attempt and seize control of the national broadcaster, Voice of Kenya.
James Ongige wrote and directed the film, with Adrian Opiyo portraying Mbotela and Maxwel Thocho playing rebel leader Hezekiah Ochuka. The project focuses on the power of broadcasting and the question of who gets to speak for a nation during political upheaval.
Voice of State is an independent Kenyan historical production whose release strategy centers on official screenings and digital promotion.
