Outskirts (2026)

Through the lens of photographer Francesco Faraci, this documentary turns its gaze to the forgotten edges of Palermo—what he calls the “out-of-focus cities.” These are neighborhoods long overlooked, exploited, and starved of real investment, where systemic neglect has quietly bred decay, poverty, and a vacuum of opportunity. In that void, alternative power structures have taken root, most notoriously the mafia. But Faraci’s journey through Sicily’s margins is more than a portrait of decline. Drawing on his own lived experiences, he reflects on how these spaces might be regenerated—not by erasing them, but by recognizing what they still hold: a raw, human authenticity and relational warmth that has all but vanished from the polished city centers. A compelling meditation on neglect, resilience, and the overlooked soul of the periphery.
