Persona is the 1966 Swedish psychological drama directed by Ingmar Bergman, which received renewed theatrical screenings in 2026 for its 60th anniversary. The film follows stage actress Elisabet Vogler, who has stopped speaking, and nurse Alma, who is assigned to care for her at an isolated seaside home.
Liv Ullmann and Bibi Andersson give the two central performances in a film that gradually destabilizes the boundary between their identities. Sven Nykvist's stark black-and-white cinematography and Bergman's fragmented visual language helped make Persona one of the defining works of European modernist cinema.
Persona remains available through repertory cinemas and specialist classic-film services.
