In the winter of 1970, a scrappy crew of amateur filmmakers descended on Knoxville, Tennessee, to chase a zero-budget dream: a gritty heist flick shot entirely on guts and goodwill. Their makeshift sets were as unconventional as their funding—an abandoned quarry doubling for a hideout, a smoky local bar for tense exchanges, and a shuttered bank building standing in for the big score. The cinematographer got his hero shot by balancing on a car hood for a white-knuckle highway chase, while the entire cast and crew hauled into the foothills for a gritty, fist-flying finale. The finished project, HONOR AMONG THIEVES, never found an audience and never turned a profit—but for its writer-director, it paid the ultimate dividend: a get-out-of-jail-free card for a looming term paper.
