Winnipeg, El Barco de la Esperanza
In the aftermath of Spain’s brutal civil war, nearly half a million people fled to France, terrified of retaliation. Among them were one hundred thousand children. France, overwhelmed by this human tide, housed them in makeshift camps. Pablo Neruda, the Chilean poet who had served as consul in Spain before the conflict, persuaded Chile’s president to rescue over two thousand refugees. This film follows Julia, a young girl who escapes Barcelona with her father, a recent widower. They board the Winnipeg, a ship Neruda chartered, which carried them away from a grim European fate. Today, she is known as “a daughter of Neruda,” a title shared by the descendants of those 2,200 survivors.
